Doom – The classic has returned

Back in my day, Doom was the greatest thing to come out for the computer since the computer itself.  All right, maybe that’s a stretch, but it was really, really cool.  I’m sure if I did a little searching I could give you all kinds of facts about it being the first major first-person-shooter of its kind or something like that.  All that isn’t really important.  What is important is whether it’s cool again.

Let’s get a couple of things out in the open.  I’m not really a game person but I loved this game, doesn’t mean that I ever finished it.  I’m not a finisher, I just play for a bit until something else captures my attention.  Next, we need to realize that taking a computer game designed to be played with a mouse and keyboard and moving it to a touch screen with no keyboard could prove to be interesting.

Main Menu

Let’s start at the beginning with the main menu screen.  You’ll see resume and new game, as well as demos and multi-player (WiFi) mode.  You can visit the company website or go into the options screen.  This is all rather straight forward and really requires no explanation.

Options Screen

Let’s take a moment now to talk about the options screen.  You get to control the three types of controls on screen.  As for what to go with, that’s going to be entirely up to you and your preference.  I took a little time to play with each before determining which one worked best for me.  You have the ability to turn on the tilt control.  This will control strafing with the tilting of the device.  Might be handy, might just get in the way, you decide.  You can go into some further settings controlling auto-use, music, and the like.  There are eight different things to change and play with on this other settings screen.

Game Play

The play is just like it was back in the day.  I know it’s easy to port over the graphics, sounds and levels, but recapturing the true feel of a game is what it’s all about.  I think they did it.  It’s funny to think that what once took a decent computer to play is now on my phone.  I know, I’m getting old.

You have all the status bar information that you used to have in the game, if I had to complain about something, it’s that you have to take your thumb off of a control to fire, but I don’t see how that could be avoided.

I do believe that this might just be one of the few games that stays on my phone for a while.

Cost: $2.99
