Redlaser – It knows what the cheapest price is!

Redlaser is actually a misnomer. There is no laser and it is certainly not red, but that doesn’t stop it from working and possibly saving you money in the process. A bit of caution: this app is going to run better on a 3GS with the auto-focus camera. I’ve heard that it does work on the 3G iPhone, but not as well. Also it works best in well lit areas.

Okay, now I said all this negative stuff in the beginning that might have gotten you thinking that I didn’t like this app. Well, you’re wrong. I haven’t stopped scanning stuff with it yet. The wife hates to take me shopping now because I’m always pulling out the phone to scan stuff. I will say that it has saved us some money once or twice. Nothing major but still – a buck is a buck! It’s fun for CDs, books, and just about anything else with a bar code on it. Now, is it worth the current price of $1.99? Well, that’s a tough one! Obviously if you’re going to use it once a day then, sure, it is worth it, but if you’re like me and only going to use it once in a while after the novelty wears off, then you’ll have to make that decision for yourself.

The app is to the point. Select the lightning bolt in the middle of the bottom bar to scan a new bar code and you’re off. The results are displayed in a list fashion with more detailed information being only a ‘click’ away. Fear not! If the UPC isn’t scanning, you can always manually enter in the numbers. Some might ask what’s the point of doing it this way? Well it’s simple – each product has a unique UPC so if you compare UPC to UPC you know you’re comparing apples to apples.
