Vector Tanks – What’s our vector Victor?
It seems almost unfair to review this app because as long as they stayed close to the original game, I would love it. Well they did and I do. It’s great to have this fun game in the palm of my hand now without the need of a roll of quarters.
I will admit that it took me a minute to understand the controls. Granted I’m sure if I had read the instructions this would not have been a problem, but like most people I don’t have time for instructions. Right?! Yeah, take that, person that took the time to write out that useful bit of information.
The main menu gets right to the point. New Game, Settings, About and How to Play round out the choices. All of what you need and none of what you don’t. I will warn you that the ‘How to Play’ takes you to a website and out of the game. Not a big deal, but I would like to see those instruction moved in-game instead.
The settings screen has the usual assortment of goodies. Brightness, Vector glow, Filled shapes, Reverse controls and of course, music. You have to have music. Brightness is self explanatory, but Vector glow might not be. They are talking about the glow of the other vehicles in the game. While Filled shapes is obvious, the idea behind reverse controls might not be. To be honest I don’t fully understand it beyond challenging myself because it is tricky to use.
As you can see from the game screen shot to the right, it is very plain but has everything that you need. Along the top you get information about your main gun (ready or reloading). Along the bottom you have information about your enemies location on the left, then your radar in the middle and you score to the right. Your number of lives left is right above the score.
You control the tank with the two green squares on the left and right of the screen. Move them both up and you move forward, move both of them down and you go backwards. Well maybe it would be better explained like this: The left square controls the left tread on the tank, and the right square does the same for the right tread. So if you move them up you go forward, if you move one up and one down you rotate in the direction of the tread that moving backwards. Great now I think I’m confusing myself. I hope this makes sense to you all. Just get in there and start playing, there is a practice level anyways so you can get the hang of it first before death is coming at you.
I really do love this game but think that it could have been priced a dollar cheaper. Then again I don’t know what goes into making these games.
Cost: $2.99
